Toward Independence, Grace and Dignity

At Prairie Home, our goal is to help every resident live each day to its fullest potential with as much independence as possible. Time is spent enjoying group activities, visiting with friends and family and pursuing individual hobbies. Meals, exercise programs and organized events give shape to the days, leaving plenty time for pursuing personal interests.

Daily Life at Prairie Home
As the day begins, residents receive help with their daily cares. Every morning after a leisurely breakfast, residents have the option of attending a fitness class or joining in a wide variety of activities organized by the Prairie Home Activity Director. With input from residents and help from a great team of volunteers, activities range from bingo and cards or dice games to movies, sing-alongs and Wii games. Activities are not only fun, but incorporate memory and speech-therapy techniques, which benefit those who struggle with recall. Prairie Home hosts a number of monthly visitors and area performers, choruses or service groups who entertain residents with live music and performances. Residents are welcome to join in activities scheduled in any of three homes. A monthly schedule is posted in each home.

On the weekly activity schedule, Thursday is set aside for onsite Beauty/Barbershop visits. Bingo is a favorite and a lively game is in session at least three times a week. Movie nights, various games and parties take place regularly. In addition there is an afternoon Bible study offered through Shepherd's Care. Trips offsite can be arranged at any time during the week via Medi-van service. While families are welcome any time, weekends are often a good time for special get-togethers. Private dining areas are available for family gatherings. In the warmer months, our covered porches, patios and wheelchair-accessible walking paths offer opportunities to enjoy the day outside. In winter months, residents can snuggle into comfortable couches for fireside chats with family and friends. Whatever season or the time of day, here at Prairie Home our heart remains the same--to meet individual needs while creating unique sense of home and family for everyone.

Daily exercise classes are held in the Fun & Fitness Room or in the large common meeting areas. Set to snappy music, chair exercises using resistance bands and balls help tone muscles and keep residents fit. Light hand weights are used to build strength and improve flexibility. A library of exercise DVDs designed for seniors is available well as exercise machines for those who wish to work out while watching their favorite programs on a large flat screen TV.

Emotional Fulfillment
At Prairie Home we understand connection with family and friends is essential to our resident’s sense of well being. We encourage family interaction by including visitors and guests at mealtimes and accommodating family celebrations. We aim to provide opportunities for families to connect and make lasting memories with their loved ones and so guests are always welcome at our many social events. Through the use of the internet, residents can stay in touch with their loved ones, near and far and even use Skype and Facebook to communicate with them on a regular basis.

Creativity also provides an emotional boost for residents and brings a sense of success, meaning and purpose to Prairie Home resident’s lives. We encourage creative expression in arts, crafts, music, the culinary arts and gardening and incorporate these creative aspects into our organized activities.

Social Fulfillment
Regardless of your stage in life, it’s important to have friends. Social interaction with other residents is a natural outcome of how life is structured at Prairie Home. Residents gather together to chat around the fireplace in the mornings or to watch an afternoon movie. Games, exercise classes and meals provide many opportunities during the day to get together with new friends. Old friends are always welcome to visit. A great team of volunteers bring in music, dance and fun from the outside world. In addition, Prairie Home keeps residents connected with the community through outings, such as group luncheons at favorite restaurants, shopping excursions and trips to sporting events.

Spiritual Fulfillment
We believe encouraging our residents in their relationship with God is also a vital part of their care. We welcome visits from clergy and faith-filled friends! For those who choose to participate, a biweekly bible study and church service is available onsite. This ministry is provided free of charge through Shepherd's Care Community Outreach. Shepherd’s Care brings the good news and God's love, hope, and encouragement to the many people who live in community-based care communities throughout the Fox Valley area. There is also weekly fellowship lead by local non-denominational ministers. A weekly rosary and communion is led by a visiting Deacon. Prairie Home encourages individual clergy visits from resident’s home churches and Hospice organizations. In addition prayer and spiritual encouragement is always available through the Prairie Home staff and management.
